Over many years this natural isolation, alongside Western Australia's rigorous biosecurity programs, has formed the first line of defence for the bees — with continuous oversight of the movement of bees and their products to limit the risk of the Varroa mite, one of the most serious pests threatening bee colonies around the world.

The Varroa mite is among the pests subject to biosecurity procedures in Western Australia, carrying legal reporting and surveillance requirements under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act — part of a framework intended to protect the beekeeping sector and safeguard the environment.
